10 Best Wireless Earbuds for Every Type of Workout

Whether you’re running, cycling, or strength training, you can find a quality pair at any budget.

best wireless earbuds for working out

The right amount of motivation is necessary for any fitness routine. But how far can you really get without a killer playlist? No matter the exercise you choose, wireless earbuds are ideal. Whether you’re pumping iron to Iron Maiden or biking to Bach, you’ve probably felt the incredible power that music has during a workout.

In fact, research shows listening to upbeat music can create a positive mindset, putting you in the right mood to sweat it out. Another study found that people who listen to music on a treadmill increase their pace and distance without feeling more tired. Music might even help delay fatigue.

But with so many options out there, picking the right wireless earbuds is almost as hard as finding the best workout playlist.

How to find the best wireless earbuds for working out

Despite the way they’re marketed, workout earbuds are not one-size-fits-all, says Sareena Rama, a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor in Orange County, CA. Keep these tips in mind when shopping for your own pair.

✔️ Consider the IP rating. For most people, sweat-resistance should be a “main priority,” Rama says. Waterproofing is measured by the IP (“ingress protection”) standard, which ranges from IPX0 for tech with no protection from liquids to IPX8 for devices that can be submerged deeper than 1 meter of water. IPX ratings are not permanent, so your headphones might become less water-resistant over time.

IPX4 is a great place to start, since the headphones will be rain- and sweat-resistant. Meanwhile, IPX6-rated devices can be rinsed in the sink, while IPX7-rated ones can be completely submerged in shallow water for half an hour (not that you’d want to do that, anyway). If you won’t be getting particularly sweaty, though, it’s fine if your wireless earbuds don’t have an IP rating.

✔️ Decide if you truly want no wires. Plenty of popular options are completely wireless. But others include a wire connecting just the buds, which comes in handy in a few common situations. Rama recommends going for a connecting wire if you’re embarking on particularly strenuous or sweaty workouts, like outdoor running. Otherwise, separate buds are just fine, as long as they stay secure in your ears.

✔️ Don’t sweat the battery life. “I personally think battery life only matters if your workouts are longer than 45 minutes,” Rama explains. A really great battery is a plus, but probably not a necessity unless you’re a cyclist, runner, or endurance athlete—it “shouldn’t be the most important factor” for more casual athletes, she advises.

Other nice features include multiple bud options, a charging case, and integration with your phone’s operating system. Now, it’s time to look for the best workout earbuds for you—check out 10 top-rated, expert-backed picks below.

There’s a reason we can’t stop talking about the Jaybird Vistas: These workout earbuds are the real deal. “I’ve been looking for the perfect Bluetooth headphones that won’t fall out of my ears when I’m working out,” trainer Adele Jackson-Gibson previously wrote for Prevention, earning these a 2021 Fitness Award. “I was amazed to discover that they don’t even fall out when I’m turning upside down! The music quality is solid, too, so I really get to jam.”

IPX7 | 8 hours

If you’re looking for a pair of Bluetooth headphones that you’re not afraid of losing, thousands of Amazon reviewers recommend these, which offer great sweat protection and decent sound for under $30. “These are great. Very comfortable, very lightweight, and excellent for running,” one reviewer wrote. “Immediately after getting them I used them for a half marathon and had no issues at all. Sound quality is fine, volume is good, BT connection is reliable, and they don’t budge even with sweat and heavy movement.”

Best Noise-Cancellation
AirPods Pro

IPX4 | 4.5 hours

No matter where you’re working out, noise-cancellation is likely to come in handy—and these impressive, cult-favorite earbuds are up to the task. Rama swears by the AirPods Pro, which are more sweat-resistant than their slimmer cousins. “Being able to switch songs easily by just tapping an earbud has made me feel so cool,” she says, and she also appreciates that your iPhone can determine which silicone tips fit best in your ears.

Best Over-Ear
Beats Powerbeats Pro

IPX4 | 9 hours

With their signature ear hook, top-notch Bluetooth, and Apple tech, these wireless earbuds won’t budge during cardio, lifting, or HIIT. “I had forgotten I even had them on, other than the fact that I had a clean crisp bass playing in my ears,” says one Amazon reviewer, who had never liked a hair of headphones before these. “After 3 miles ... I realized I never had to adjust them or push them back into my ear, not once!”

Best Wired
Bose SoundSport Wireless Earbuds

IPX4 | 6 hours

Technically, there’s a wire connecting these earbuds, but it doesn’t connect to your phone, meaning you’ll get all the benefits of Bluetooth plus the ability to leave a bud dangling with no fear of losing it. Runners and walkers, these are meant for you. “The fit is perfect,” one reviewer raves. “I run in them, and they don’t fall out. Easy controls (volume, song skip), and even a fun color. Excellent sound.”

Best Battery Life
Sony WF-SP800N Earbuds

IP55 | 9 hours

With one of the longest-lasting batteries we’ve seen in a pair of truly wireless earbuds, this Sony option is a steal compared to other models. (The battery even balloons to 13 hours when noise-cancellation is turned off.) And the secure ear hook and extra-deep bass are cherries on top. “These are my new favorite earbuds across the board,” says one reviewer, who is a cyclist and runner. “I find myself reaching for these for multi-hour Zoom work sessions as well as tough workouts or just around the house while I do chores.”

Best Sound
Beats Powerbeats

IPX4 | 15 hours

Those same Powerbeats from above are also great as a wired option—and reviewers say that their sound quality is pristine. Low battery isn’t an issue, either, since just five minutes of charging offers up to one hour of juice. “I am blown away,” says one reviewer, who raves about their incredible audio, adjustable sound quality, and great battery life. “It will take a little time to get them comfortable, but that’s no problem.”

Best for Calls
Jabra Elite Active 75t Earbuds
Now 34% off

IP57 | 5.5 hours

These Jabra wireless earbuds have microphones so crisp that you won’t need to pause your workout to take a call. On top of plentiful battery life and great sound, they blow away the competition when it comes to clarity. “I walked through the wind and there was little to none wind distortion on the other end,” one reviewer raves. “These microphones help isolate the outside noises so your voice is the only one that is focused. They work, and they work well.”

Best for Apple Users
Apple AirPods

Not rated | 5 hours

Although they aren’t technically sweat-resistant, the ubiquitous AirPods are still a go-to for countless athletes. Two separate trainers previously recommended these headphones to us because of their ease of use, surprisingly powerful grip, and integration with Apple’s iOS, which comes in handy when you’re an iPhone user looking to get the most out of a pair of earbuds.

Best for Cycling
Exfit BCS-700

IPX4 | 8 hours

The rigid wire between these headphones means the entire structure stays in place during intense workouts—perfect for cycling and running, when you’re at risk of losing an earbud along the way. “I literally use my bluetooth headsets all day long, for almost every purpose,” says one reviewer who runs and skates. “I don’t think you can beat this device.”
